TPMS protection is the planned control of bead-breaker and mount-head movement around the pressure sensor.
Identify sensor type before bead breaking.
Begin away from the valve.
Control bead path near the sensor.
Use correct service kits and relearn.
Sensor arrangements
Many direct sensors attach to the valve stem inside the wheel, but designs vary. Vehicle information should be checked.
Avoiding damage
Start bead breaking away from the sensor. Position the wheel so the bead does not drag across it during demounting or mounting.
After installation
Replace seals and hardware as specified, torque correctly, leak-test and perform relearn or verification.
Diagnostic reference
| Finding | Possible meaning | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor breaks | Tool started near valve | Reposition |
| Slow valve leak | Seal or service kit issue | Replace and torque |
| Warning remains | Relearn or sensor issue | Diagnose system |
Workshop procedure
- Identify sensor.
- Deflate.
- Break beads away from sensor.
- Control bead path.
- Replace service kit.
- Mount and relearn.
Frequently asked questions
Is the sensor always on the valve?
Often, but not always.
Can old seals be reused?
Follow manufacturer guidance; many are replaced during service.
Why can the warning remain?
Incorrect pressure, damage or missing relearn are possible.
